Building boats, rebuilding livelihoods

As well as lives and homes, Typhoon Haiyan also destroyed people’s ability to earn a living. Fishing is a major industry in the Philippines, and estimates suggest that 28,000 small-scale fishing boats were destroyed across the country, depriving tens of thousands of people of their livelihoods.
 
To help fishermen restore their main source of income Concern is working in Concepcion, a coastal municipality in the province of Iloilo,  to help fishermen repair damaged boats and rebuild new ones.

In an area where over 2000 boats were destroyed new boats are in high demand. A boat yard has been set up and a team of carpenters and tradespeople are working hard to make sure people return to the sea, and their livelihoods, as quickly as possible.

For boats that could be salvaged Concern is providing cash grants or materials and tools so that people can get their boats repaired themselves.
